Torfaen MS calls on Welsh Government to fund summer childcare for key workers

Written by on 3rd July 2020

Torfaen MS Lynne Neagle is calling on Welsh Government to fund childcare for key workers over the school holidays.

The MS wants Welsh Government to provide urgent clarity and funding to local authorities to enable them to offer appropriate childcare provision for essential key workers.

She is particularly keen to see childcare provided for NHS and social care staff who are involved in the vital work to catch up on NHS activity suspended during the pandemic.

Lynne Neagle said:

The contribution of key workers during the pandemic has been huge. The NHS is now engaged in a major catch up exercise, it is absolutely vital we continue to provide childcare for essential key workers.

The MS, who is chair of the Senedd’s Children, Young People and Education Committee, has asked other Members of the Senedd to support her campaign by signing her Statement of Opinion on childcare for key workers.

Lynne Neagle’s statement of opinion reads:

‘This Senedd notes the huge and incalculable contribution that has been and continues to be played by Key Workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

‘This Senedd recognises the continued need for childcare for some key workers during the school summer holidays, in particular NHS and Social Care staff who are also involved in vital work to catch up on NHS activity suspended during the pandemic.

‘This Senedd calls on Welsh Government to provide urgent clarity and funding to local authorities to enable them to offer appropriate childcare provision for essential key workers who need it during the school holidays.’
